Toyohari Acupuncture
According to the ancient theory of oriental medicine, our health depends upon the balance of "life-force" energy (Qi) which flows through invisible channels (meridians) throughout our body. When Qi becomes deficient or out of balance, we eventually start to develop symptoms of illness.
Acupuncturists are trained to recognise signs of physical and emotional unwellness that are associated with each meridian, and by stimulating points along the meridians (usually using very fine needles) they aim to restore balance to the whole system.
There are many different systems of acupuncture in use today. The main type of acupuncture that I practise is the Japanese tradition of Toyohari. This involves the very shallow insertion of extremely fine needles through the skin, and use of special techniques with a variety of unique metal tools to manipulate the Qi by tapping, stroking or just touching on the skin surface. The treatment is very gentle and relaxing and does not cause pain. I find it very suitable for treating young children or adults who are afraid of needles.
An important part of the treatment is moxibustion, in which small pieces of a dried herb (moxa) are smouldered close to the skin to bring a soothing warmth and aid the healing process. For more information about moxa go to the About Moxa page and Moxafrica link.
GOING FOR A TREATMENT
On your first appointment a thorough diagnosis is made. I will need to ask about your medical history, as well as aspects of your lifestyle and diet, in order to build up a picture of you as a whole, and to establish the cause of your energy imbalance. Important parts of the diagnosis include the examination of your abdomen, back, neck and tongue, as well as any specific symptomatic areas, and feeling your wrist pulses.
During the treatment, which may take up to one hour, you will be sitting or lying on a massage couch. You may be required to take off any jewellry and to undress down to underwear. Your personal comfort is very important to me and for the effectiveness of treatment, and I will always do my best to ensure that you feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible.
